OFFSET PRINTING
VS.
DIGITAL PRINTING
...what the heck IS
offset printing
anyway? I thought
EVERYTHING was
digital these days!"
I was having lunch a few
days ago with a print
buyer I had known for
years, and we were
deeply involved in the
details of a large
upcoming job, when the
conversation (which was
getting pretty technical)
stopped, and he looked
at me with an odd
expression. I asked him
what was wrong -- did
he need me to perform
the heimlich on him?
Was something caught in
his throat? "Nope," he
said, "I'm just so
embarrassed to ask, but
after years in the
business of buying
printing, I actually don't
really have a decent idea
of how a job actually
gets printed." He went
on, "I don't know what
the difference is between
offset and digital -- or
between screen printing
and dye sublimation -- or
thermography and
engraving!"
